Potential Breast Surgery Complications

Breast augmentation can produce fabulous results, but as with any surgery, there are a number of risks to consider, including the possibility of ruptured breast implants and capsular contracture. The information below addresses the risks saline and silicone breast implants, as well as other problems that can occur after breast augmentation. Consult your surgeon for further information on possible breast implant problems specific to your case.

Before you choose to undergo breast augmentation surgery, it is a good idea to learn as much as you can about the potential complications of the procedure. Many serious post-surgical problems can be avoided by choosing an experienced and qualified plastic surgeon who is able to properly assess a patient’s risk factors and promptly treat any complications that arise from breast implants. Your cosmetic surgeon will review the possible health risks caused by breast implants as well as any precautions you should take before you undergo surgery. Patients should know that, regardless of the type of implant used, it is very possible they will need to have one or more additional surgeries over the course of their lives because of complications and other breast implant problems. Potential reasons for re-operation include complications such as ruptured breast implants, capsular contracture, wrinkling, asymmetry, and implant malpositioning.

Dangers of Breast Implants

Nobody looks forward to undergoing any surgical procedure. Regardless of how desirable its outcome, surgery can be a scary process. This holds true to breast augmentation surgery, a cosmetic surgical treatment that enhances the size and shape of a patient's breast tissue. The best way to absolve any fears of the dangers of breast implants is to make sure that the surgical procedure is being performed by a board certified plastic surgeon whose medical qualifications provide you with some trust. Additionally, it is important to know the dangers of breast implants in case any complications may arise. Although the majority of breast augmentation surgical cases end with safe and trouble free results, some dangers of breast implants include:

Additional surgeries:
By undergoing breast augmentation surgery, patients have increased the likelihood that they will have to undergo additional surgical treatments. Often surgery will be needed to replace or remove the breast implant.

Breast Tissue Atrophy:
Also known as chest wall deformity, this condition results from the pressure of the breast implant causing a patient's breast tissue to thin and shrink. This condition can occur while breast implants have been removed or are in place.

Capsular Contracture:
This condition refers to a situation where capsule, also known as scar tissue, which usually forms around the breast implant begin to tighten and the breast implants begins to feel squeezed. It is a condition that typically follows infection and should be treated as soon as it is detected. The symptoms of capsular contracture range from mild firmness and discomfort to severe pain and movement of the breast implant.

Cosmetic results:
While the majority of breast augmentation patients have positive experiences with the outcome of the surgery, many find that they are dissatisfied. Problems such as wrinkling, asymmetry, implant displacement, incorrect size, unanticipated shape, implant palpability, scar deformity, hypertrophic scarring, and sloshing can occur, which may lead to patients unhappy with the outcome of the surgery.

Deflation:
Also known as rupture, this is a condition that occurs when the breast implant has deflated due to either a leak within the implant or a rupture of the implant shell.

Hermatoma/Seroma:
Both of these conditions typically occur within 24 hours of breast augmentation surgery and relate to issues of the patient's blood. Hermatoma refers to the collection of blood inside a blood tissue and seroma is the collection of the watery portion of the blood. Following surgery, postoperative hermatoma and seroma can result in infection and the development of capsular contracture. In particular dire cases of large hermatomas and seromas, the patient may need to undergo surgical draining to properly heal.

Infection:
Infection can occur within any surgery and breast augmentation surgery is no different. The one complication in patients with breast implants is that doctors have more difficulty in treating infections in these people compared to patients with normal body tissues.

Nipple and breast sensation changes:
Due to the amount of surgical work used in breast augmentation, you should expect an increase or decrease in the feeling of the nipple and breasts. Nerve endings are often severed during this treatment and it may take months for your nipples and breasts to regain sensation. Changes in these areas can be permanent and range from intense sensitivity to no feeling.

Pain:
Following breast augmentation surgery, you should expect to rest for a week to allow your body to heal. Much like any other surgical procedure, it is not unheard of for patients to feel pain of varying intensity and duration following the treatment. However, if this pain continues to linger and grow to the point where it is severe, you should consult your plastic surgeon immediately. Severe pain can be an indication that complications have arisen due to improper breast implant size or breast implant placement.

Infection risk of breast implants

BBC News

Women undergoing breast implant surgery have a 2.5% risk of suffering a post-op infection, a worldwide study of 10,000 people suggests.
And for cancer patients having breast reconstruction the risk is up to 10 times higher, the University of Geneva Hospitals in Switzerland said.

The UK Government said last week the rules governing cosmetic surgery would be tightened.

Most of the infections were acute infections which developed immediately after the surgery, while the rest happened months or, in a few cases, years after surgery.

Most infections require the implant to be removed.

The Risks Of Breast Implants

DrDonnica

The furor over whether silicone breast implants cause systemic disease has died down since abundant data has shown no increase in systemic illness in women with silicone breast implants versus those without implants. However, women still need to be aware that breast implant surgery carries serious potential risks.

All surgeries have risks. In addition to the risks of anesthesia that go hand in hand with any surgery, it is widely known that elective breast implant procedures carry risks. These risks include implant leakage, implant contraction, and scar tissue build-up. For many women, this means dissatisfaction with their appearance, health risks, and repeated surgeries.........

Status Report on Breast Implant Surgery

FDA.gov

"Recently published studies have shown that women with silicone gel-filled breast implants do not have a greatly increased risk of some well-defined autoimmune diseases, which were among the serious health concerns surrounding the devices. These include potentially fatal connective tissue diseases such as scleroderma and lupus erythematosus.

The new studies do not, however, rule out the possibility that a subset of women with implants may have a small increased risk of these conditions, or that some women might develop other immune-related symptoms that don't conform to "classic" disease descriptions.

Nor did the studies address other important safety questions, including implant rupture rates and the incidence of capsular contracture (shrinking of scar tissue around the implant, which can cause painful hardening of the breast or distort its appearance). Answers to these and other questions await the results of new or ongoing studies.

Widespread reports of adverse reactions to silicone gel-filled implants and a lack of evidence supporting their safety led the Food and Drug Administration to order the devices off the market in April 1992. They remained available only to women in clinical studies, mostly women seeking breast reconstruction after breast cancer surgery. Saline-filled implants were allowed to remain on the market for all uses."

Always consider natural breast enhancement before dangerous, expensive breast implant surgery.

New Health Web Site for Girls

4women.gov

The Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health (OWH) today launched a new health Web site, www.GirlsHealth.gov, to encourage adolescent girls to choose healthy behaviors. The site, part of HHS' National Women's Health Information Center, provides girls ages 10-16 with information on fitness, nutrition, stress management, relationships with friends and family, peer pressure, suicide, drugs, self-esteem, and other topics in an interactive, user-friendly format. The launch is part of the ongoing Prevention Initiative recently announced by HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson. The announcement was made at the HHS Young Women's Health Summit being held in Washington D.C.

The 4girls Web site includes six sections:

Becoming a Woman answers the questions girls might be afraid to ask about changes to their bodies, the menstrual cycle, and grooming and hygiene. From breast growth and body hair to acne and hair care tips, this section addresses the issues that concern girls the most as they approach and transition into puberty.

Asymmetrical Breasts May Raise Cancer Risk

womenshealth.gov

Asymmetry between a woman's breasts is normal, with few women having exactly the same-sized left and right breasts. But a new British study suggests that the greater the size difference between breasts, the higher a woman's risk of developing breast cancer.

"This is the first evidence of a possible link between breast asymmetry and predisposition to breast cancer," said lead researcher Diane Scutt, director of research in the School of Health Sciences at the University of Liverpool.

Scutt's team published its findings Monday in the journal Breast Cancer Research.

The researchers calculated the breast asymmetry of 252 women free of breast disease when they got mammography but who later developed breast cancer. They then compared the findings to data on 252 healthy women of similar age.

Women who developed breast cancer had higher breast asymmetry than the healthy controls, the researchers found.

Best Steps for Healthier Breasts

There is still no known way to prevent breast cancer. By the end of 2005, an estimated 212,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in the United States, along with 58,000 new cases of noninvasive breast cancer. This year 40,000 women nationwide are expected to die from breast cancer. But advances are being made: If breast cancer is caught early before it spreads, the five-year survival rate is now greater than 95 percent. The key is early detection and treatment.

How can you fight breast cancer? Your best chance is to establish a breast health regimen that focuses on breast awareness, regular screenings to ensure early diagnosis, and lowering your risk for developing breast cancer. Breast awareness means becoming familiar with your breasts and what they look and feel like normally, then reporting any suspicious breast changes to your health care professional immediately.

Here are some important things you can do to keep your breasts healthy:

Breast Cancer: Detecting Realities, Not Myths

Health.Discovery.com

Fear and confusion are at the heart of myths about breast cancer. Yet, the truth is breast cancer detection and treatment has improved dramatically. Don't let these seven myths stop you from getting the care you need.
Myth: Breast cancer has become an epidemic in young women.

Reality: Although more women are at risk, 95% of breast cancer cases occur in women ages 40 and over, and more than three quarters occur in women ages 50 and over.

Myth: Breast cancer kills more women than any other disease.

Reality: More American women die of heart disease and lung cancer. In addition, women with breast cancer have a 5-year survival rate of over 96% if their cancer has not spread beyond the breast at the time of diagnosis. Early diagnosis is the key to survival.

Breast Augmentation Risks

Breast implants are medical devices. Like all medical devices, they provide certain benefits but also pose certain health risks. If you are considering breast implant surgery it is very important to understand the nature and extent of these risks before you make a decision. The decision to choose breast implant surgery can only be made by you in consultation with your doctor.
